Kayak Trailer Revisited

Remember this? ..... (CLICK HERE FOR  PART ONE)

I finally ordered the steel I needed to extend the tongue on the locking kayak trailer. I ordered an 8 foot 3 X 2 X 3/16 wall A500 Rectangle Steel Tube from Metals Depot.  I also picked up a inch and 7/8 coupler and the stuff to extend the wiring.

There are only two bolts holing it onto the trailer so taking the short tongue off was easy. Once off I measured and drilled the holes in the long beam.

Then I drilled and attached the coupler.

Once I had that on I welded a loop onto the bottom with the safety chain in place.

After I got it all mocked up, I removed, dismantled and painted the beam.

After a couple days I installed it all onto the trailer.

Lowered the kayak to see how its going to sit. I think it will be just fine.

Next I will need to build or buy a cradle to hold the kayak in place and level. I am thinking a u shape in the rear and a v in the front like you would see for a boat. I may use two slanted rollers in the rear instead of a cradle so it can be put on and off without rubbing the top of the trailer. I really do not need it until October for my Bear Island trip. I can use my other one until this one is done so I can take my time.
